Hey La Grande Alive!

In the news today, leadership advice from a pilot-turned-candidate for Oregon governor…

And a political forum streamed on La Grande Alive…

…it’s practically political this week only on your weekly Newsish Roundup, brought to you by…

What does it mean to be a good leader? As someone in leadership positions, this is a question I ask myself pretty constantly. And this week I got the opportunity to learn a little more about leadership from Greg Wooldridge, a candidate for Oregon Governor and he said that good leadership boils down to these four traits.

Greg was the three-time commander of the Blue Angels, a US Navy flight group that travels all across the world and does recruitment through awesome feats of aerodynamics. And now he’s bringing his leadership skills to the political arena and running for governor of Oregon. And how will he bring those leadership skills to Oregon politics?

But how will this affect eastern Oregon, I asked him.

To learn more about Greg, watch the rest of his interview on La Grande Alive. LIke this story? Share it along and get entered into the La Grande Alive March drawing for a Lebebe Cakes gift card.

This story was brought to you by… Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Grande Ronde Hospital, EONI, Anything2Digital.com, and Les Schwab Tires

And speaking of politics, did you know that there’s more than just one candidate for US Senate Position 2? There’s 11, in fact. And nine of those 11 candidates are going to be in once place March 22nd at the La Grande Middle school for a forum.

Kathy McGuire is a member of the Union County Progressive and the Union County Democrats, organizations dedicated to getting people to talk about local politics right here in our valley. But the forum isn’t going to be just democrats. There will be 7 democrats but there’s also going to be one independent and one republican candidate, she said. And their goal, she said, will be to get all the options in one room.

Can’t make it? That’s okay. The forum will be live streamed on La Grande Alive so you can tune in with your phone or computer.

Hey La Grande Alive! In the news today, two new programs from OTEC…

…and an in-depth look at the annual Boy Scout Derby…
…only on your weekly Newsish Roundup, brought to you by…Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Grande Ronde Hospital, EONI, Anything2Digital.com and Les Schwab Tires

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVOregon Trail Electric Co-Op has started two new programs to better help their community. OTEC is your locally member-owned power company. And they strive to be an active part of our community.

And they have two new programs designed to do just that. The first is member-to-member. Member-to-member is a member cost-sharing program that is designed to help people when their luck is down and they can’t pay their power bill. Any OTEC member who signs up for the program can choose to contribute a tiny amount to an assistance fund. Then, when someone can’t pay their bill, those funds are allocated by the board of directors (if they feel like there’s a real need) to help them get back on their feet.

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVNow, if you choose to participate, you can either round up your power bill to the nearest dollar, or just choose to give a standard amount every month. The bottom line is that for less than a buck a month you can help people to pay for their power when they’re down on their luck and the weather looks like this:

The second program is the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Did you know that Dolly Parton grew up the daughter of a blue-collar subsistence farmer and construction worker? Dolly knew that he was a very intelligent person, but he couldn’t advance in life because he couldn’t read. And so she now that she’s older and, well, really really rich and famous, she has started a program to give free books to kids ages 1-5 to help them learn how to read.

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVAnd OTECC has recently adopted this program. Every month, OTEC will send books to the kids of any family in any OTEC county. So if you live where OTEC is if you call sign up your children, your child will receive an age-appropriate book every month until they turn 5 years old. That way they can continue to read and all those mental synapses can continue to grow.

Interested in either of these programs? Get ahold of your local OTEC representative and ask to learn more and maybe even sign up.

Oh I love children! Oh you are so adorable and fun!

Oh, Hey La Grande Alive! In the news today, the kids club after school program.

And a teacher-turned political candidate stops into the studio

Only on your weekly Newsish Roundup brought to you by Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Grande Ronde Hospital, EONI, Anything2Digital.com, and Les Schwab Tires

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVCommunity Connection has several new fundraisers to help their after school program Kids Club. What is Kids Club? After kids get out of school, they can head down to Rivera School (or get picked up by the bus) and spend several hours playing games, doing activities, and eating nutritious snacks. Way better than sitting at home killing brain cells with Spongebob if you ask me. The program started several years ago with about 10 children and has since grown to almost 40. And this week I got to sit down with some of the founders and operators of the program and talk to them about why it’s so important.

But kids club needs your help. The program doesn’t run on peanuts and watermelon seeds. So the people at Community Connection have put their heads together and designed several creative fundraising programs to come up with some extra cash. The first is the Kids Club discount card. If you buy one of these bad boys for 10 dollars, you get discounts from over a dozen local businesses in La Grande. Essentially, the card can pay for itself in two or three purchases if you do it right. It’s also a great way of making spending a littl more locally and helping your local businesses.

The second fundraiser is a raffle. The first item being raffled off is an overnight all expense paid stay out at Hot Lake Springs. You get a hotel room, a movie, breakfast, and the soaking is included. All this valued at a measly $225 dollars. The second item is a one-of-a-kind homemade quilt. It’s value is, well, pretty much priceless. And tickets are only 5 bucks a pop.

The third fundraiser is called Ladies Night Out. Want to get together and go shopping!

Well, grab your lady friends and head down to Ladies Night Out, this Friday at 5:30 pm at Riveria Center. There’s going to be local vendors, a silent auction, and the winners of the raffle are going to be announced.

If you’re interested in purchasing a raffle ticket for either of these items or learning more about Kids Club, you can call Community Connection at this number. Or you can visit their website. The link is in the description of this video.

Lesley Ann Kopp, 67 of Cove, Oregon was found deceased at 1902 4th Street in La Grande on April 19th, 2018. As of now, the cause of the death is still unreleased by the law enforcement officials. Lesley Ann Kopp is the wife of Dr. James Kopp, and Lesley was found in the building of her husband’s medical practice near downtown La Grande.

This week I contacted several individuals involved with the investigation, and they said that the investigation is in its late stages. Over 20 items of evidence have been investigated and there are 30 hours of video surveillance that are being reviewed in order to understand what, exactly, happened to Mrs. Kopp in her last hours.

Now, the police want to be clear, there is no reason to believe there is any further danger to the public.

On a more personal note, Lesley seemed to be well liked in Cove, her hometown. One person posted on her Facebook page after her death:

“I don’t know how to understand this. You were the sweetest step sister anyone could have hoped to want. Always so welcoming and loving. I’m just still in shock.”

Another person commented:

“This news has cut so deep. Though we didn’t spend much time together in these last few years my early life memories of you are deep. You were always so kind, patient and generous to me. Hug my brother and Jesus for me. You are deeply missed.”

La Grande Alive will have more on this story as soon as the cause of death is revealed to the media.

Blue Mt Seed is having an open house and tour of their cleaning plant. Blue Mt Seed cleans grass seed right here in Union County. It’s a unique process that involves sending the seed, after it’s harvested, through a series of sifters that increase the purity of the seed so that it can be shipped out and sold for you to use in your lawn.

And on May 4th, Blue Mt. Seed is celebrating their 50th anniversary cleaning seed. And as such, they’re inviting the public to come and see the process.

The open house is May 4th at 1pm. It will be held at their Imbler plant and they’ll be having tours. For more information, visit their Facebook event page. The link is in this video’s description.

Hey La Grande Alive! In the news today, a summer camp special at the Maridell Center…
…plus a look at our last county commissioner candidate…
…only on your weekly Newsish Roundup, brought to you by…

The Maridell Center is hosting a summer-long camp so kids can have a safe place to go and learn while having fun! Lisa Mackley the daughter of Jerry Mackley, the owner of the Maridell Center. She just recently came back to La Grande from a trip to Australia. And she’s been looking for a way to plug in for the summer and help with the mission of the maridell center: to keep kids safe and having fun!

Lisa believes that kids learn best through fun. And in keeping with that belief, she’s designed a summer-long series of themed weeks for kids to come and learn about different important things through unique methods.

Kids will learn about science by building volcanos out of clay, learn about zoology by playing laser tag, learn about the wild-wild west through playing put-put golf. And that’s just the beginning. The camp runs from the first week of July all the way until August 24. And many of the volunteers are members of the Maridell Youth Club, a club dedicated to kids’ virtue and integrity.

For more information on pricing or to sign up for the camp visit the Maridell Center webpage. The link is in the description of this video.

Colleen McLeod is running for County Commissioner and she’s banking on the fact that she’s done it before.

Colleen McLeod has served multiple terms as Union County Commissioner. She ultimately stepped down for personal reasons. But she’s back, and she hasn’t changed, she said, and her experience makes her the best candidate for the job.

Colleen is a local business owner, and she sees many parallels between business and being a County Commissioner.

Transcript follows:

Have you ever been tempted to veer off the path? In the news today, a play at EOU explores these themes.

…and a behind the scenes look at how votes are counted in Union County…

…only on your weekly newsish roundup, brought to you by…

The human question of desire: what are you willing to do to get what you want? And when you get it, will it really satisfy you? These are some of the questions asked by an upcoming play at Eastern Oregon University: Into The Woods. It’s the favorite play of both Kenn Wheeler and Mike Frasier–both EOU theatre directors–because, well, because of the lessons it teaches.

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVInto the woods is a play based loosely on the Grimm’s Fairy Tales we all know and love through the disney films that make them lame. Essentially, Stephen Sondheim, the writer, took a bunch of different Grimm characters–little red riding hood, cinderella, Jack from Jack and the beanstalk–and sent them into the woods. And don’t let Mike and Kenn fool you–the play is good natured and fun as it is about the lessons it conveys. There’s lots of comedy and goofiness for all. But in the end, the play has a very strong moral question to it.

If you’re interested in this play, it’s showing at EOU May 16-19 at EOU in the Mackenzie theatre. Its 15 for general admission, 10 for seniors, and EOU students and faculty see it for free.

When you drop your ballot off in the mail or in the drop box, what happens to it? Well, the ballot goes through a rigorous process of vetting and checking before it is officially counted. And I got a chance to see that process in action this week at the Union County clerk’s office.

Weekly Newsish Roundup LGA TVFirst the ballot is delivered by Union County sheriff’s to the Clerk’s office. Then the ballots are sorted into precincts. Each ballot is then removed from it’s “security envelope” and the ballot is checked for cleanliness and neatness so that it will go through the counting machine correctly. Ballots that have lightly filled in boxes or coffee stains and such are duplicated by hand by a special group that contains volunteers from different political parties so that no one is tampering with the ballots that need to be recreated.

After this, the ballots are sent through the counting machine. The machine is checked for accuracy with a practice batch before, during, and after the election to ensure there’s no mechanical errors. And finally, the results are printed off an analog printer in the clerk’s office listing the results by precinct. None of the printers or counting machine are connected to the internet so there’s no possibility of electronic tampering.

Now, Robin also mentioned that, as of Tuesday the 8th, only 19 percent of ballots had been returned for Union County. So if you’re going to vote, get those ballots filled out and returned. And make sure if you’re going to mail them you have to put them in the yellow security envelope and sign it if you want it to be counted.
